Abstract
Sustainable urbanization stands as one of the most critical challenges in Latin America, particularly in the Dominican Republic, where rapid urban growth has generated severe territorial imbalances, infrastructure deficiencies, and environmental degradation. This article analyzes the main obstacles hindering sustainable urban development in the country, identifying structural factors such as uncontrolled urban expansion, vulnerability to natural disasters, lack of affordable housing, limited citizen participation, and inadequate institutional governance.
The study highlights how unplanned urban expansion has led to the proliferation of informal settlements lacking basic services, increasing socio-spatial inequality and reducing quality of life. Likewise, the inefficiency of public transport systems, the deterioration of infrastructure, and the loss of green spaces aggravate pollution and environmental vulnerability. The absence of effective regulatory frameworks and transparent governance limits the implementation of coherent public policies, while weak civic participation prevents communities from influencing decisions that shape their urban environment.
To move towards sustainable urbanism, the article proposes strategies based on integrated urban planning, investment in resilient and equitable infrastructure, preservation of green areas, environmental education, and the promotion of participatory governance. These measures require coordination between the State, private sector, and civil society under a collaborative and transparent development model.
In conclusion, achieving urban sustainability in the Dominican Republic depends on a multidisciplinary approach and inclusive territorial management that promote social equity, environmental efficiency, and resilience in the face of climate change and accelerated urbanization.
