Abstract

In contexts of urban marginality in Latin America, interstitial spaces have historically been interpreted as degraded voids, overlooking their role in everyday life. The main issue lies in the disconnection between formal urban planning and the social practices that produce and redefine these spaces. This study aims to analyze the spontaneous appropriation of interstitial space in informal settlements, recognizing its social, spatial, and environmental value as a basis for inclusive urban design strategies. A mixed and situated methodological approach was employed, integrating literature review, cartographic analysis, field observation, surveys, and interviews, complemented by a design-oriented component based on the characterization of interstitial nodes. The results show that these spaces—ravine edges, alleyways, open clearings, and river margins—function as essential nodes for gathering, recreation, and community cohesion, despite their precarious conditions. Additionally, patterns of appropriation, recurring deficiencies (shade, lighting, basic infrastructure), and opportunities for low-cost tactical interventions were identified. The study concludes that recognizing the social production of space enables more inclusive, resilient, and context-sensitive planning. The originality lies in integrating territorial diagnosis, community participation, and a replicable design proposal. The findings are applicable to informal settlements across Latin America. Limitations include the focus on a single case study and the lack of implementation of the proposed urban device.
