Abstract
It is indisputable that the Architectural Heritage is part of the historical memory of a town, constituting one of its most important cultural heritage. Cemeteries, although part of these, are often ignored by researchers. The Municipal Cemetery on 30 de Marzo Street, the oldest in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, the second most important city in the Dominican Republic, has true jewels of local funerary architecture, samples of architectural styles from different periods and typologies of burial; However, for many this heritage remains unknown and undervalued. The main objective of this work is to demonstrate the architectural and heritage values of this nineteenth-century cemetery, as well as its safeguarding plan. From exhaustive field and office work, a catalog was obtained where the tombs with monumental architectural value are recorded in technical sheets, as well as a plan of the cemetery showing its evolution and locating the tombs, classified by styles and typologies. At the same time, an intervention plan is proposed that consists of two fundamental axes, the first: a remodeling, conservation and restoration plan, and the second: dissemination and awareness. It is important to note that the research was financed by the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra through its “Competitive Funds for Research” program and was carried out in collaboration with architecture students from the same university, either in the form of interns, those enrolled in the subject Theory of Architecture or Final Degree Project.
