Abstract

Urban music, which is widely consumed, raises questions about its possible negative impact on youth, especially regarding criminal behavior. In the Dominican Republic, there is concern that this genre may influence negative behaviors, although consumers seem to ignore this impact. This study examined the relationship between irrational beliefs and lack of knowledge about the influence of urban music on criminal conduct. A correlational mixed methodology was used with 91 participants, employing Albert Ellis' Irrational Beliefs Questionnaire and a designed survey. The results revealed a high prevalence of irrational beliefs, especially the need for approval and dependence. A correlation was found between the belief that urban music is preferred by people with a criminal record and several irrational beliefs. However, there were no significant correlations between knowledge or consumption of urban music and irrational beliefs regarding criminal behaviors. Additionally, a disparity was observed in the knowledge about the influence of music on crime across different socioeconomic classes, underscoring the importance of considering not only exposure to urban music but also the socioeconomic context in which individuals develop their perceptions and beliefs on this topic.
