Abstract

Universitys play a leading role in the development of scientific knowledge. The performance of these institutions leaves traces favorable to the development of every nation; since they are part of a social gear, which has a radical impact on the definition of the paths by which they guide the development of regions and countries. This work aims to address this problem from the context of the Covid-19 pandemic related to the incidence of these institutions as fundamental actors in the development of society. A conceptual analysis of several perspectives and approaches of the scientific literature was carried out, based on a documentary analysis, taking the criteria of highly relevant contemporary authors. Emphasis is placed on the incidence of universities in Social Innovation as a phenomenon promoted by citizens, communities that reinforce the so-called third mission of these academic institutions from the triple helix model approach: government-business-academy. It concludes with the main challenges that distinguish the actions of these institutions in current contingencies.
